Breakfast and lunch will cost 25 cents more at Burbank campuses next school year

The increasing costs of food, fuel, supplies and salaries led the Burbank Unified School Board to vote to raise the price of school meals by 25 cents Thursday night.

“With the rising cost of food, labor increases, everything across the board, basically, we need to be able to stay fiscally solvent,” said Kathy Sessinghaus, director of food services for Burbank Unified.

Overall, the price hike represents a 2% bump, and the board voted 5-0 to approve it.

The change will bring the cost of breakfast on elementary campuses from $1.50 to $1.75.

Breakfast prices at middle and high schools will go from $1.75 to $2.00.

Meanwhile, lunch prices will rise to $3 for elementary students and $3.25 for secondary students.

Breakfast prices at the elementary schools have not been raised since 2008, while breakfast prices at the secondary schools were last raised in 2013.

Lunch prices at all schools have not increased since 2008, according to a district report.

School board member Steve Ferguson said the price hike was “still reasonable,” and said he appreciated that Sessinghaus kept prices “as low as possible.”

Had the 25-cent increases been approved for the 2015-16 fiscal year, the district would have seen $45,359 more in revenue for its breakfasts and lunches combined.
